Description

Byzantine architecture is the architecture of the Byzantine Empire. Republic of Macedonia as a part of this empire during the centuries has a lot of heritage, mostly in a shape of churches and monasteries. These churches are among the most valuable monuments of the middle age architecture around Skopje, the capital of Macedonia.

St. Pantelejmon monastery – built in 1164 as a foundation of Alexius Angelus Comnenus, the church and monastery dedicated to St. Pantelejmon, the patron saint of physicians are located in the village Nerezi, on the slopes of the nearby mountain Vodno and contains one of the most valuable Byzantine frescoes (more info).

St. Demetrious church (Marko Monastery) – the original church was built in the 14th century, and later it was restored in 1376/77, when it was completely painted with highly unique frescoes, important for Byzantine art. The church is dedicated to the martyr St. Demetrius and the monastery complex is named after Marko, one of its founders (more info).

Church St. Andrea (Matka) – the church settled in the picturesque Matka canyon was built in 1389 with the fresco painting dating from the time of its foundation (more info).

The Monastery at Matka – the church dedicated to St. Virgin Mary originated from the late14th century, and it was renewed and fresco painted in 1496/97 by the founder Milica, the feudal lady from Skopje (more info).
