Description
The classical city tour includes a walk through the landmarks of the old part of Skopje, starting with the multi layer archaeological site of Skopje Fortress placed on a hill, which gives a view to the old and the new part of Skopje. The tour continues with walking down toward Mustafa Pasha mosque (1492) and the church of Holly Savior (18c., with the extraordinary iconostas), which are on the border between the upper (acropolis) and down ancient part of the city. The tour proceeds to the historical district known as the Skopje’s Old Bazaar characterized by architectural mixture of churches, mosques, inns, baths, including Daut Pasha Hammam (XV AD), Chifte Hammam (XV AD), Kursumli Inn (XVI AD), Kapan Inn (XV AD), Suli Inn (XV AD), Bezisten (XV AD covered bazaar), many craftsmen’s shops, old buildings, hotel, restaurants and pubs and small shops. The tour proceeds toward the ancient Jewish quarter located near famous Stone Bridge by the Vardar River and continue with short guiding throughout the monuments, historic figures, sculptures and new buildings envisaged by the project ‘Skopje 2014’, located around the main city square. The tour ends with the visit of the Memorial house of Mother Theresa, who was born in Skopje in 1910, located near the City Museum, or the old Railway station which connected Skopje with Thessaloniki during the Ottoman period.
